Captain Marvel (2019) Movie Review

“This isn’t about fighting wars. It’s about ending them”

Captain Marvel is a 2019 superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics and is the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The story revolves around an extra-terrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself in an intergalactic battle between her kind and the Skrulls. The protagonist, Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers, who keeps having recurring memories of another life on Earth as a US Air Force pilot. With Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) help, Carol Danvers discovers the secrets of her past while harnessing her superpowers to end the war between Kree and Skrulls and becoming one of the most powerful superhero ever.

This movie is a great family movie, where it is the first Marvel movie with a female lead. This movie offers positive messages about perseverance, integrity and much more. The protagonist is not objectified, women support women and the characters are diverse and romance is not always at the centre of all things.

We see the start of the relationship between Fury and Coulson, the development of their relationship, the origins of Nick Fury’s eye-patch and the origins of the Avenger’s initiative. With some laughter and light heartedness to this movie, it became a movie on its own but also sets up for the most anticipated Avenger’s movie, Avengers: End Game.

Recommendations

I would not watch this Marvel movie as a stand alone. You should have a backstory of what is going on before watching this. If not, you would not get the full picture of what is going on. Nevertheless, it’s a well made movie.

Score: 7.5/10

Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) Movie Review

“Light hearted Marvel sequel to Ant Man (2015)”

Ant-Man and the Wasp follows the story of the original Ant-Man finding his missing wife who was once thought to be dead, but has survived stranded somewhere in the quantum realm. Dr. Hank believes his wife left a message in Scott’s head when he went subatomic (in Ant-Man (2005)) and somehow only he knows where to find her. Scott agrees on this mission along side Hope van Dyne, aka The Wasp. The mission was pathed with obstacles by a superhuman by the name of Ghost who persists on seizing Dr. Hank’s tech for her own purposes of being quantumly unstable from an freak accident when she was a child.

Like Deadpool, I prefer Ant-Man (2015) more than this sequel. This is a light hearted yet optimistic sequel which provides the laughs Marvel fans may crave for, after the heartbreak of Infinity War. At times, it felt like the movie did not progress as well and the antagonist’s character “Ghost” was not developed enough to be a villain.
