Overview
Sex Education is a British TV series which was released on Netflix on 11th of January, 2019. It follows a socially awkward high school student, Otis (Asa Butterfield), who does not have much experience in the love making department but gets substantial guidance and knowledge from his sex therapist mother Jean (Gillian Anderson). Otis decides to use his knowledge to improve his status at school and teams up with a smart badass girl, Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey), to set up a “sex clinic” to deal with their classmate’s relational and sexual problems.
This show tackles a myriad of teenage sexuality, abortion, porn and sex. The show treats all these sensitive topics seriously but in very “raw” manner, using teenagers who saying stupid things and portrays it in an accurate way to how some students act today. These teenagers do not have everything figured out, but their charismatic acting and vulnerability will engage the wider audience in an instant.
The writing and character development are phenomenal. A stand out is the protagonist’s gay best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa). The charisma that he gives off makes the sidekick role almost the starring role.
The innate sweetness of this show comes with the message of a 16-year-old boy who might be ready for sex, while another might not be but that’s okay, because it isn’t a race.
This TV show might be about teens but is entertaining to everybody, but it should be watched preferably/ only if you’re 18+ as there are mature content.
